I'm an
Individual
I am a full-time student at Harvard Graduate School of Education working on my Master's in Education with an emphasis in Education Policy and Management. I recently earned my Bachelor of Art's Degree from Claremont McKenna College in Government with a minor in Holocaust, , and Human Rights. My academic experiences have taught me a plethora of writing styles and methods. In addition, my various job experiences have strengthened and reinforced my writing skills while also broadening the topics of research that I have worked on. WRITING EXPERIENCE Throughout my academic career, I have had the opportunity to learn the ways in which to write pieces in several different styles, both long and short: research papers, narratives, and descriptive pieces. Furthermore, my academic emphasis has enabled me to explore and investigate many different topics. Specifically, I have spent most of my time writing about contemporary education policies, though a large portion of my time has also been dedicated to other American public policies and international human rights doctrines, courts, and legal structures. While my primary focus has been political and legal, I also have written many pieces on historical matters. To see a sample of one of my works, the following link will bring you to my undergraduate senior thesis: http://....edu/ JOB EXPERIENCE I recently completed my role as a Student Manager at Roberts Environmental Center at Claremont McKenna College. While at the Center, I gained research and leadership skills through community outreach and engagement. I was also given the opportunity to apply my creativity by developing innovative projects and goals for the non-profit. For example, I founded the Environmental Outreach and Education Team; my team and I worked to create reproducible, hour-long lessons instructors could use to teach environmental policies, sciences, and political topics to young students. Thus far, we created a beta product that has been thoroughly researched, through literature reviews and group and individual interviews. During Summer 2014, I completed a full time internship with Learning Innovations at WestEd, a nonprofit education research, evaluation, and services firm in Boston, MA. My time at WestEd enabled me to develop a more defined interest in K-12 education policy. I have strengthened my skills in data analysis and compilation, and gained new skills in using data to prepare and write reports. In addition, I have improved my research skills by conducting literature reviews, through which I acquainted myself with the use of several academic databases and journals. I assisted in conducting and analyzing data from focus groups and interviews. Previously, I interned at the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education within the Department of Education. The position strengthened my understanding of policy development. The internship helped me recognize the problems that must be addressed for underrepresented students as well as identifying processes necessary to remove these academic obstacles. This internship also allowed me to improve my consulting skills, as I directly conversed with institutions about their practices. Moreover, similar to my internship at Learning Innovations at WestEd, this experience refined and enhanced my formal writing skills; at the Initiative, my boss expected me to compose reports and memorandums for the staff and letters to institutions’ presidents. Furthermore, I used the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and, alongside the Initiative’s Executive Director, I learned the importance and process of developing quantitative metrics to determine best practices. I am very interested in obtaining an internship throughout my spring semester and this upcoming summer that will allow me to address my career goals in education policy research, particularly to improve the educational outcomes for underrepresented students.
