We’ve come to think of websites and landing pages as actual webs. We lace and bait them with highly targeted keywords. We pay data scientists and IT guys a boatload of money to get exactly the right verbiage so our SEO is unbeatable. And it works. But it doesn’t. Because people don’t care about your page. There are as many pages on the web as there are stars in the sky. No one owes you any attention. They click through the net relentlessly, ruthlessly. You pay a consultant 12 grand to get your landing pages above the fold, yet your bounce rate remains at 90% and your ROI is . . . bad. Obviously, your visitors are searching for the top tier of your semantic core or they wouldn’t show up. So how come they aren’t sticking around? Why don’t they come back? Because the web is not a net. It’s an ocean. These visitors are not numbers. They aren’t faceless traffic. They’re people. They sail this wide sea of data on a ship laden with attention looking for the perfect place to drop anchor and be entertained. They aren’t there to be captured. They want to meet new friends, to hear new voices, to engage. They’re not searching merely for a place to land. They’re searching for a place to stay. The waters they sail are exhausting. Every click is a new wave that crashes over their bow then disappears. They’re tired from the pointless chase of click bait listicles and memes. They want to dock and disembark and rest. That is their chest of gold. They want, more than anything, the reward of a good read. An article that pulls them in, sentence by sentence, until they reach, breathless and on the edge of their seat, the very last word. They want someone to tell them a story. Reward your visitors with great writing and you’ll be rewarded with their undivided attention for however long it takes to finish your article. Don’t make your pages a net. Then all you’ll catch is fish. Use award-winning writing from a noted author and columnist. Turn your website into a Harbor.
