Many people make the mistake of writing a personal statement like a cover letter. It is important to be transparent, but the best essays are the ones that can implicitly highlight an applicant's qualities. Show me these qualities through your actions in a story, don't tell me -- use imagery. Show me insight. Show me reflection. Show me analysis about your experience. Show me passion, depth, uniqueness. Your career plans, when your interest developed. Most importantly, show me who you are. Who are you? Every word counts. If it's not interesting, scrap it. A good story can go a long way towards your candidacy. I've been in those rooms. I've written statements and acted as a consultant for applicants. When an admissions officer picks up your essay, they're often hoping that this essay is going to be better than the last snooze-fest they just finished reading -- that this one will bring them to the edge of their seat. Those essay are few and far between. But when they do surface -- like any good story -- they stick. My rates are as follows: 35 cents per word. I will write the story. I will need to talk to you over the phone/meet with you/exchange multiple emails/questionnaires whereby I'm able to extract enough information to develop a unique story for you. 15 cents per word for an in-depth critique. A 2 page breakdown of your 1 page personal statement, including strengths, weaknesses, specificities that need to be addressed, etc. I take the time to customize my work.
