http://....org Writer Location: San Francisco The Company: EducationSuperHighway is the leading non-profit focused on upgrading the Internet infrastructure in America’s K-12 public schools. We believe that digital learning represents an unprecedented opportunity to provide every student with a world-class education and that every school requires high-speed broadband to make that opportunity a reality. EducationSuperHighway’s data-driven programs help accelerate upgrades in America’s schools. We work to raise awareness of the school connectivity gap, provide technical and procurement expertise to states and districts, and advocate on behalf of students to influence policy decisions. Our work has helped shape President Obama’s ConnectED initiative and served as a catalyst for modernization of the Federal Communications Commission’s $2.4 billion E-rate program. The Team The marketing team has two key objectives a) Elevate EducationSuperHighway as the preeminent expert on the topic of Internet in schools and b) Build awareness of and drive demand for EducationSuperHighway tools and services. Many of the activities of this team are traditional marketing including branding, audience analysis, website design, public relations, communications, social media, events, and program-specific direct engagement. More than this, the marketing team plays a key role in our advocacy work, working extensively with our data analysts to prepare compelling arguments for policy reform, facilitating planning around partnerships, and articulating case studies and best practices for district upgrades. The Role The technology writer will report to the Director of Marketing and Communications, supporting all writing and editorial needs across the organization. The ideal person for this position is someone who not only has great command of the English language, but is also adept at structuring complex and often technical topics to make the content digestible. Candidates who have written for technology-specific trade publications will be very favorably considered; we are looking for those who have gone beyond general interest pieces to really understanding a technical domain and breaking it down for readers with specific interests. Beyond this, we are seeking a strategic thinker, someone who can understand the big picture of what we are trying to accomplish as an organization and ensure that all of our written materials cohesively reflect these objectives and thus our mission. Key Responsibilities Write network resource guides for targeted education audiences by developing an in-depth understanding of each audience’s needs and working with internal and external subject matter experts. Craft messaging specific to a given program or campaign, and then work with the Marketing Manager to re-purpose this material across all channels, including email, brochures, websites, and social media. Draft EducationSuperHighway’s comments and language for proposed policy reforms relevant to our mission, working closely with various staff members, consultants, and our legal council. Own and update all written content related to our brand materials including our website, presentations, and ongoing newsletters, ensuring consistency with both brand and mission. Provide editorial support for other activities as needed, including grant writing. Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a writing-intensive subject required 3-5 years of experience with extensive, technology writing required, ideally for a technology-oriented trade publication 1-2 years of experience doing editorial work Experience conducting interviews to understand audience needs and gather the content required for writing Proven ability to develop a tone of voice that aligns with the organizational culture and mission and to carry that throughout various written pieces Desire to learn about new topics and comfort using the writing process to facilitate this learning Ability to both think strategically about the big picture, and systematically gather and articulate the concrete details Experience in policy and/or legal writing a strong plus To apply please send a resume, 3 – 5 writing samples, and a cover letter describing your interest and qualifications to [email protected] with “Writer” in the subject line.
