Alex is a freelance reporter and photographer with five years of experience covering public policy and highlighting personal stories in and around Chicago. He was born in New York City and grew up in Westport, Conn., where he wrote and edited for Inklings, the school newspaper at Staples High School. In 2011 he was awarded the Courage in Journalism Award by the Connecticut Academic Press Association for writing an article in Inklings that led to the discontinuation of a program encouraging cheerleaders to bake cookies for football players before games. Alex took a gap year between high school and college, living in Maturín, Venezuela as an Rotary International exchange student between August 2010 and June 2011. The experience left him with a fluency in Spanish and a keen understanding of Latin American culture and politics. He then attended Northwestern University's Medill School of journalism, where he wrote hundreds of articles and served in multiple editing roles — including news editor, executive editor and print managing editor — for the campus news magazine North by Northwestern. He graduated in June 2015 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and international studies. Between spring 2015 and November 2017, he worked as a full-time reporter for DNAinfo Chicago — first as a breaking news reporter, then as a neighborhood reporter covering the city's Far Northwest Side. During that time, he authored thousands of articles on crime, local politics, real estate, education, business, transportation and education across almost all of Chicago's 77 community areas. Most articles were accompanied by photos he took. An Eagle Scout with special distinction from the Western Connecticut Military Officers Association, Alex has a passion for the outdoors. In December 2017, he'll embark on a four-week backpacking trip through six national parks.
