I am interested in working with others as they strive to report on their lives in memoirs or autobiographies. As a sociologist, who is part of a discipline that enjoys capturing idea and events in compelling argot, I have experienced the ability to offer listeners and readers insightful words and phrases that add sparkle to the understanding of life. Old sociological standbys such a “ego extension” and “conspicuous consumerism” are great examples of how a new blend of only two words can paint an instant picture of “possible parental relations” with their children or “people’s outlandish purchasing choices.” With the Covid pandemic we are living in changing times and will need to be even more swift-footed in our abilities to understand and describe our life’s experiences. A simple practice such as the search for useful verbal combinations will be even more important. By working with others and listening to their life experiences, I hope to offer insights on both the analysis and encapsulation of individual histories.
