In 1998, a school district in Illinois placed an advertisement in a newspaper for a writing consultant. An overwhelming majority of the sophomores in the district had failed the writing portion of the state's standardized test, and they needed help. In the interview, I called attention to the fact that I was not an English major. I was a theatre major who had taken enough credits to be be licensed to teach English; however, because I had a background in writing commercials and scripts, they said, "We have English majors; we need a writer." I was hired. Although I am highly capable in the area of mechanics, what I brought to that challenge was not an ability to be a strict grammarian. My approach to writing is to create works that "sound" good. I approach writing as though what is being written is going to be read aloud on a stage. As a matter of fact, I can tell you from my experience as an actor who voices audio books, writing literature that sounds good is a tremendous challenge facing new writers. When I arrived at that interview, 68% of those students had failed the state's writing test. After my final year with that district, 87% met or exceeded the standard.
