I'm an
Individual
I started out writing print ad headlines and broadcast scripts on a Smith-Corona typewriter. Today, I write 90,000-word book manuscripts on a Mac. While I miss the darker hair I had during my younger days I love writing long form copy, whether it's a manuscript, a brochure, a white paper, a case study, an article, or just a letter to a friend. I recently finished a manuscript for a business book that I really think is unique and special. Other book projects include a very entertaining work about personal finance and behavioral economics, a fascinating insight into urban planning (no, I wasn't excited about the project at the outset, but it's proven very enlightening), a biography of a woman who lived nearly 100 years, and even an inspiring novel based in 1970s Texas. The point is that I can write on numerous subjects using a number of different styles. I handle dialogue and description extremely well and am effective in both first-person and third-person POV. Furthermore, I am quite comfortable writing humorous material, which drove my editor crazy during my decade as a Scripps Howard News Service columnist. One time while flying home from Toronto I wrote a funny column about a Canadian politician who'd soon be checking into the Steel Bar Inn. The piece was a bit long and my editor asked me to trim some words. I responded by saying that since $1,000 in Canada translated into about $700 in the U.S... "Doesn't 1,000 words written in Canadian airspace translate into about 700 words here in the States?" My editor told me curtly that I had an hour to finish cutting down my work. He also told me to stop using his newspaper space to campaign for turning the United Nations Building in New York into a Giant Hooters Restaurant. A Giant Hooters really would be a better use of the real estate, don't you agree? What I'm looking for in a job is the opportunity to put my writing skills on display for any client who has something to say—but may not know exactly how to say it. I'm sure I can help!
