I'm an
Individual
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I am a German writer and producer, recently moved to Los Angeles, to further my career as a TV writer. In the meantime I would greatly appreciate if you would let me apply my talents to the task at hand. In Germany, I owned a talent agency, representing domestic and international writers and pitched successfully to a range of clients for all kind of storytelling challenges from telecom companies to government institutions and the biggest German TV networks. I wrote and produced TV shows and feature films and worked for Germany's biggest production companies UFA (Fremantle), Ziegler Film, Bavaria, having been crucial to some of their biggest successes in documentary, TV movies and drama series. I was responsible for a continuous output of pitches, presentations and concepts and lead a team of editors, writers and producers, ensuring that the content presented to networks and co-production partners always lived up to the creative vision of my employer. I came to Los Angeles in 2014 on an assignment of the German Film University in Potsdam to research methods of teaching screenwriting at UCLA's School for Film and Television (TFT). While at UCLA I conducted interviews with students and staff about their learning and teaching experiences. Later I also was invited to work as a teacher of undergraduate classes in international TV coproduction. My research served as the foundation for a postgraduate course in scriptwriting at German Film University. Now I work as a producer and writer, matching projects of German clients with interest of studios, production companies and agencies here in Los Angeles. Last year I pitched two TV series to studios Sony, Lionsgate, MGM and Entertainment One, to agencies CAA, WMA and Paradigm and to showrunners Nicole Yorkin, Blake Masters and Daniel Cerone and could secure deals between those companies and their US counterparts. In an earlier career I worked as editor for feature films and documentaries, won awards and my work was also mentioned as outstanding in Variety. While working with a production company in Switzerland, I rose from post production manager to in-house-director and directed commercials for clients Procter&Gamble, Schweppes and Nestle. I started out as a journalist, covering such different topics as the Bosnian War in the Nineties and the subsequent refugee crisis, or Madonna's first role in a movie "Desperately seeking Susan"; my approach to writing fiction is closely related to reality, I find and translate into fiction true stories. The last example of this is "Operation No Moore" about Charlotte Wilms, a mother of a girl that became the target of a internet porn entrepreneur. Charlotte, who was technically ignorant fought the guy and won. Legislation regarding the responsibility of Internet platform owners about content posted on their sites has changed ever since. The screenplay won several US screenplay contests. Prior to this I received a B.A. in Editing at Italy's National Film School, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Europe's oldest film teaching institution, and a M.F.A at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne where I also worked as an assistant and organized a number of seminars and courses with international participants. I speak German, Italian, French and at the moment I am learning Spanish. I am proficient in the use of all office software as well as Final Cut pro and Premiere and also have a decent experience in HTML5 and CSS3. Please visit my personal website and online portfolio at www.....net for further information about me and samples of my work as a writer. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information. Yours Sincerely, Dr. Michael Esser
