Writer in Toronto, Ontario
I'm an
Individual
Hello everyone,
Please let me introduce myself.. my name is Cami Croteau. I have recently left a PhD program (in good standing) because I am anxious and curious to begin a fulfilling and lasting career writing. I say writing vaguely not to attract a wide variety of employers, but because I believe I have a diverse skill set. My history with writing is an interesting one. I began writing at age 9, small stories on my Linux software system, determined to earn a Bachelor's degree in English. I was deterred and landed a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology (random, I know). Cut to 6 years later, I find myself leaving a PhD in sociocultural studies of Kinesiology with a Master of Science in Kinesiology. While I'm sure my training will benefit technical, medical, and scientific content writers, and would be open to that style as well, I find myself drawn to creative, quirky, and novel avenues.
My professional career in writing is limited: I have written a master's thesis, which is in the process of scholarly publication in the form of two studies. Other experience points to two conference papers, a myriad of higher education projects, and a stint on my high school's newspaper ("The Cornerstone"). What I lack in "professional experience", I make up in drive, diligence, work-ethic and open-mindedness. With over ten years competing at national and international levels on a volleyball team, I know what it takes to work as part of a team in order to achieve a common goal. Furthermore, my post-secondary studies have prepared myself to work hard as an individual. I know when to ask questions and appreciate constructive criticism that helps me grow as a person, writer, and employee.
For those who prefer bullet points, below you'll find a list of my personal attributes that are relevant to jobs or a career as a writer:
- writing is clear and concise
- project organisation has a comprehensive and intelligible flow
- writing style can be technical, scientific, creative, or narrative, depending on the content
- moderate skill level for vocabulary, syntax, style, and grammar
- constantly improving vocabulary, syntax, style, and grammar
- able to modify citation and reference styles based on preferred methods (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.)
- able to work in fast paced environment with rushed deadlines
- academic writing includes: abstracts, summation pieces, systematic reviews, scholarly articles or publications
- medical writing includes: report briefs, translation of scientific findings (data, analysis, reports, publications) for specific audiences, educational brochures; no experience in regulatory writing but am willing to learn
- narrative writing includes: excerpts for magazine and newspaper articles (short and long), practice with historical narratives and storytelling
- research, collecting resources (secondary for a remote position), and data collection are among the things that I enjoy doing in my spare time
Well, I hope this was enough information to get a sense of who I am. I would love to chat one-on-one to get to know you as a company, business, or individual.
Cheers,
Cami Croteau
