The clacking of keys could be heard long before reaching the top of the landing. She was lost again; he could be sure of that. Unintelligible muttering and the clank of a coffee mug echoed down the hall, followed by a harsh intake of air. “That’s not where that comma is supposed to go!” Oh yes, it would be well past midnight before he would be able to settle this storm. If prior years had taught him anything, it was better to ride out the waves than go against the current in front of him. The sound of the old floorboards should have alerted her, but she remained hunched over her desk, hiding behind a veil of dark brown curls. “How’s the writing coming along?” She stiffened. An eery silence filled the small space and occupied every corner that shied away from the lamplight. “I’m never going to finish this in time,” Hannah murmured, finally turning around to meet his gaze. “What if they don’t like it?” Her eyes darted to the window, as if she was just noticing how dark this world had become while she was exploring in another. Her hand reached out slowly, the slight tremble of what could only be exhaustion or too much caffeine evident in her movements. He met her halfway with a small smile. Her fingers left cold indents against his palm, a feeling he had grown fond of with every touch. “Someone will like it—someone with the same vision,” he whispered, following her gaze to see the street lamps flickering on one-by-one. “You just have to be patient and keep on going.” ———— I have not written a full story in a long time, I will admit. I am that girl who will sit at a desk and not realize the day is long gone until someone has to come find me and “rescue” me from my own little world.
